One of the hallmarks of Leopold Stokowski (1882-1977) was not only his quest for ‘new’ contemporary works (expensive to record for the first time) but also for sumptuous sound. As the stereo era dawned in the late 1950s he turned to the new Everest label recording system (using 35mm magnetic film and their specially designed six channel console), offering the highest pinnacle of the recording art to-date at that time, with wider frequency range and dynamics. Although Everest ran short of funds a few glorious years later, they had some support from another up-and-coming New York label (Vanguard) run by Seymour Solomon, who licensed some of their recordings for wider exploitation, and so became involved himself recording more of Stokowski’s projects during the 1960’s using his own Manhattan studios on 23rd Street.
